David Cook Records Idol Farewell Song "Don't You (Forget About Me)"

For the past year, David Cook has been hard at work in the studio, writing and recording tracks for his highly-anticipated sophomore album with producer Matt Serletic, while collaborating with the likes of David Hodges, Ryan Tedder, and his bandmates, Neal Tiemann and Andy Skib. The record which will be released by 19 Recordings/RCA Records in Spring 2011, but much to his fans delight, the long wait for new music from Cook has finally been lifted through the arrival of an "extra treat"!

This morning, David Cook Official announced that American Idol Season 7 winner's rousing rendition of the Simple Mind's "Don't You (Forget About Me)" has been selected as this year's farewell song. The singing competition show will be using the resident rocker's recording of the 80s hit as they pay tribute to the Season 10's eliminated contestants each week. Cook's remake of the classic rock anthem will be an uplifting and refreshing relief from the roster of melancholy tracks typically used by the show as they bid farewell to their departing finalists.

Listen to the audio stream of the new song below. You can receive a free download of the recording when you pre-order Cook's forthcoming album through his official website. The single will also be available for purchase on iTunes and digital retailers on March 8th.

Be sure to catch the American Idol results show tonight on FOX to witness the first airing of Cook's "Don't You (Forget About Me)".
