The Artist

The Artist (2011)
Determined to watch every nominee in the 2012 Golden Globes' 'Best Motion Picture:  Comedy or Musical' category, I ran to a showing of The Artist on a Friday afternoon.

Set in Hollywood in the late 1920s and early 1930s, The Artist tells the tale of the transition period between silent films and talkie films through the rise of charming ingenue, Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo) into the spotlight, and the fall of the suave Hollywood veteran, George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) from the acting world. The film was just as dazzling, charismatic, and clever as I had anticipated! As a black and white silent film, The Artist is an example of the power of telling a story using only movement, expression, and music. Its stunning cinematography, score, and performances (Valentin's loyal canine, Uggy, deserves special recognition for his integral role in the film) make The Artist a strong contender for this upcoming awards season!

This is the first year that I've thoroughly enjoyed ALL of the works nominated in a particular category. Each of the films were centered around two of my favourite themes - nostalgia and friendship. It's going to be a tight race between The Artist, Midnight in Paris, 50/50, My Week With Marilyn, and Bridesmaids tomorrow!
